Impact of arterial structure and blood composition on Functional and Structural MRI Biomarkers

  • The vast majority of MRI biomarkers are dependent on blood to generate their signal. Yet, we rarely consider the influence of the integrity of the cerebrovascular system and blood composition on our biomarkers. How do the signals of different MRI contrasts change due to their proximity to an artery and blood composition?

Understanding the short and long-term impacts of hormone exposure on the brain and cerebrovascular health

  • Sex hormones interact with receptors on neurons and blood vessels, through which system their protective effects arise?

  • Hormone exposure is dynamic across the female lifespan, what are the effects in the short and long term on the brain? How does the effect differ with endogenous and exogenous exposre?

Theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (iTBS)  for treatment-resistant depression in adolescents.

  • iTBS is effective in adults; does this translate to adolescents?

  • Estrogen and progesterone are known to influence neuronal excitability,  and puberty increases the rates of depression in adolescent girls; therefore, does the menstrual cycle phase influence response to iTBS?

  • Can iTBS be used to treat hormone-related mood disorders such as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder?
